WebTerm X™ Version 4.0.2 Read Me

August, 2002

Welcome to WebTerm X Version 4.0.2 from Powerlan USA, Inc.

WebTerm X provides seamless and secure access to X Window applications with an extensive set of features targeting the needs of users of both traditional "stand-alone" and web-enabled X servers. Central to the web enablement features are both an ActiveX control (for Microsoft browsers) and a Netscape browser plug-in. The TunnelMate security facility, which is installed with WebTerm X, uses the SSH protocol and state of the art encryption to assure that your X connections and login information will stay private. The WebTerm X Administrator is an easy to use application that creates and configures connection files. Each connection file launches X applications with just the click of a mouse.

You can browse Powerlan USA's WebTerm X site at http://www.powerlan-usa.com/webtermx for information about product updates as well as tips, hints, and technical support bulletins.

The following information is intended to help you install and use the software. Please see the printed and online manuals for more detailed information.

1. WEBTERM X VERSION 4.0.2 NEW FEATURES

  • ActiveX Support

WebTerm X now provides support for embedding X client applications for the newer releases of Internet Explorer, versions 5.5 (SP2) and later. This functionality is provided by the WebTerm X ActiveX Control.

The WebTerm X Administrator now generates an HTML OBJECT tag in addition to an EMBED tag. The OBJECT tag identifies the WebTerm X ActiveX control.

  • CAB File Installation

WebTerm X now installs transparently "on the fly" when using Internet Explorer via a CAB (cabinet) Installer file. The CODEBASE attribute of the OBJECT tag specifies the URL for the WebTermX.cab file. The URL may be customized by editing the "If Active X Control is not installed go to" field on the WebTerm X Administrator Web Page tab. The CAB installs the same set of files as are installed by the WebTerm X Power Plug-in Installer, with the Internet Explorer browser option selected.

  • Resizable Embedded X Client Windows

Embedded X client windows are now resized automatically when the size of the browser window changes. To enable this feature, specify a percentage (e.g. 50%) in the Width and Height fields in the WebTerm X Administrator Web Page tab.

2. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

The WebTerm X Administrator and Power Plug-in require, at a minimum:

  • The Windows 95/98/ME, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000 or Windows XP operating system.
  • 16MB of free disk space.
  • A TCP/IP connection to UNIX or VMS hosts running X client applications. In addition, the host computers and any intervening routers and firewalls must allow access via the REXEC, RSH, SSH or XDMCP protocols.
  • A Web browser that fully supports the ActiveX API or Netscape Plug-in API. Specifically, one of the following:
--Microsoft Internet Explorer: Version 5.0 is required at a minimum.
--Netscape Navigator: Version 4.5 or later
--Netscape 6/7: Version 6.0 or later

Note: If you plan to use WebTerm X strictly as a stand-alone X server, you do not need a Web browser.

3. INSTALLATION

Before Installing WebTerm X

Uninstall any previous installation of WebTerm X . To uninstall versions of the WebTerm X Administrator and WebTerm X Power Plug-in prior to Version 3.0, choose the Uninstall icon from the WebTerm X Administrator program group. If only the WebTerm X Power Plug-in was previously installed, choose the Uninstall icon from the WebTerm X Power Plug-in group. Delete any files or folders that the uninstall process leaves behind.

If you have WebTerm X 3.0 or later installed, use the Windows Add/Remove Programs Control Panel.

Installing WebTerm X Administrator and WebTerm X Power Plug-in

1. To install the WebTerm X Administrator on the administrator's computer, double-click the Wtxadmin.exe file that you downloaded. It is a self-extracting archive and it will automatically invoke the WebTerm X installer. Follow the on-screen installer instructions. This installation procedure should be used on any computer that needs to run the WebTerm X Administrator program. It also installs theWebTerm X Power Plug-in.

2. To install the WebTerm X Power Plug-in only on an end-user's computer, double-click the Wtxplugin.exe file that you downloaded. It is a self-extracting archive, and it will automatically invoke the WebTerm X Power Plug-in installer. Follow the on-screen installer instructions.

3. At the end of the WebTermX installation, the Powerlan Ltd. security client, TunnelMate, may be optionally downloaded. You may also install TunnelMate at a later time by accessing the TunnelMate Installer at http://www.powerlan-usa.com/tunnelmate/downloadwin.

Installation Notes:

--The Installers allow you to specify which browsers you will be using with WebTerm X. If you select Internet Explorer, the WebTerm ActiveX control is installed in the Windows System folder. If you select Netscape Navigator or Netscape 6, the WebTerm X browser plug-in is installed in the Netscape Plugins folder.

--The WebTerm X installer includes the English version of Direct X Version 7.0, and installs all necessary Direct X files. Direct X is standard (built-in) with Windows NT 4.0, Windows 98/ME, Windows 2000 and Windows XP systems. Many Windows 95 users may already have Direct X installed as a result of high-performance graphics applications or games that use Direct Draw and other DirectX subsystems. The WebTerm X installer will only overwrite an older version of DirectX, and only if you answer "Yes" to an alert asking you if you want to upgrade to DirectX 7.0.

--You do not need a serial number to install WebTerm X. However, you will be asked for it the first time you run a WebTerm X Power Plug-in or the WebTerm X Administrator. If you do not yet have a serial number, click the Demo button to run in Demo mode.

Demo Limitations

If you are using Demo mode, you can use WebTerm X for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, any connections you have open will close. To re-establish a demo connection, select "Close" from the WebTerm X Power Plug-in popup menu in the taskbar notification area and reload the Web page.

You may obtain a 30-day evaluation serial number by contacting the Powerlan USA sales department.

Demo Sites

If you have only the WebTerm X Power Plug-in installed, visit the Powerlan USA WebTerm X pages to connect to demo sites at http://www.powerlan-usa.com/webtermx/wtx-demos.html. If you have the Webterm X Administrator, you can use Powerlan USA's demo pages or create your own web pages that use WebTerm X.

Uninstalling WebTerm X 4.0.2

If you wish to uninstall either the WebTerm X Administrator or WebTerm X Power Plug-in, use the Windows Add/Remove Programs Control Panel.

4. WEBTERM X VERSION 4.0.1 PROBLEMS RESOLVED

  • Control 1 - Control 9 characters now work correctly.
  • WebTerm X serial numbers now correctly register Tunnelmate 2.1.

5. WEBTERM X VERSION 4.0 PROBLEMS RESOLVED

  • Characters on international keyboards that are formed by combining a diacritical (dead-key) with another character are now handled correctly.
  • A problem which caused input focus to be lost when switching between X client windows and other Windows applications has been corrected.

6. ISSUES AND LIMITATIONS

  • WebTerm X does not work with X clients such as xroach or oneko which expect to draw in the X root window.
  • If you create a Web page with more than one embedded WebTerm X connection, be sure that the WM_NAME property for each connection uniquely specifies the name of the X window to be embedded, as described in the manual. If you don't use specific WM_NAME parameters, there is a chance that the multiple embedded windows may appear in an order you didn't intend.
  • Each embed tag has a unique, system-wide identifier. Don't create new connections by copying the HTML of existing EMBED Or OBJECT statements and modifying them manually. If you do that, you may run into problems with X clients appearing in the wrong place. Always use the WebTerm X Administrator to create HTML that defines WebTerm X connections.
  • WebTerm X can be run from a "read-only" directory once it is completely installed and the WebTerm X serial number has been entered. However, the user must have write permission in the WebTerm X directory to run WebTerm X in order to enter the WebTerm X serial number.
  • OpenWindows 3.0 does not work correctly with WebTerm X in 16-bit color mode. This is a bug in OpenWindows. If you experience this problem, try running Windows in 256 color mode or 24-bit color mode.
