WebTerm X Frequently Asked Questions

Does WebTerm X support Low Bandwidth X (LBX) extension?

WebTerm X does support the Low Bandwidth X (LBX) extension with WebTerm X version 3.0.
The Low Bandwidth Extension (LBX) is a network transparent protocol for running X applications over slower speed connections. LBX defines a new optimized protocol that uses data compression and caching techniques to improve performance. LBX is implemented in two parts: an X Server extension and a host proxy application. It can be used with existing X client applications by placing the proxy between the X client application and the X server, so the LBX protocol enhancements occur between the proxy and the X server.
To use LBX:
- The lbxproxy program must be running on a host.
- WebTerm X must be started before lbxproxy is run.
To run lbxproxy use this command:
- lbxproxy:<port>-display<yourpc>:0
- where<port> has a value between 0 and 999; (default is 63)
- where <yourpc> is the IP address of the PC running WebTerm X.
- example: lbxproxy:70-display xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:0 -- This starts the proxy using host port 6070 which is connected to WebTerm X on a PC with IP address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx, port 6000.
To launch a client using LBX compression:
- xterm -display yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy:70 -- routes xterm to WebTerm X through the lbxproxy program on host yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy using port 6070.
- For other LBX options consult the lbxproxy man page.
- WebTerm X handles non-LBX connections concurrently with LBX connections.
