WebTerm X Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use WebTerm X and start and X client via TELNET?

Yes you can start an X client via Telnet and redirect it's display to the PC that is running WebTerm X's X server if:

  • The host is available on your TCP/IP network (and not behind a firewall or such).
  • The host is running X Windows.
  • The host and network supports the TELNET connection protocol.
  • You have a user account on the host.

Procedure for starting an X client via TELNET:

1.  Install the WebTerm X Plug-in or WebTerm X Administrator on your Windows 95/98 or NT 4.0.

2.  Start the just the WebTerm X server (not the WebTerm Administrator or Plug-in) by double-clicking on the /webtermx/xserver/wtxv2.exe file.

3.  Determine what you PC's IP Address is.  After connecting to your network or to the internet, you can find out what your current IP Address is by running Windows' winipcfg.exe (Windows 95) or ipconfig.exe (Windows 98 or NT 4.0) utility.

4.  Connect to your host via TELNET and log in.  Windows includes a Telnet utility that you can start running telnet.exe.

5.  At the host's command prompt, start the X client and redirect it's display back to the IP Address your computer that is running WebTerm X.  An example of command to start the xterm X client and redirect it's display is:

/usr/bin/x11/xterm -display xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:0.0 &
