Support - WebTerm - Internet Explorer Macintosh problems

WebTerm Frequently Asked Questions

Why does WebTerm not function properly with Internet Explorer for Macintosh users?

Currently there are four main issues with Internet Explorer and WebTerm. This causes some unique problems when attempting to take advantage of some of WebTerm's advanced features.

First: Currently using Netscape on either Windows or Macintosh JavaScript determines the availability of a plug-in by searching in the "navigator plug-ins" array. Unfortunately via JavaScript we have yet to find a way to determine if WebTerm is currently installed. Internet Explorer on Windows the plug-in array does not exist. VBScript is used to check if WebTerm Active X control is installed. WebTerm for Macintosh users, however, neither are an option. The plug-in array does not exist and there is no ActiveX control for Macintosh.

Second, if the desired effect is to use WebTerm in "full-page" mode using Internet Explorer version 4.5 or later Internet Explorer will need to know how to handle the .WTS files.

  1. Click Edit menu in Internet Explorer and then Preferences.

  2. Click Receiving Files and then click File Helpers.

  3. Click the Add button. Now enter the exact settings in the below screen shot.

Third, Currently there is no way to access the WebTerm API (Application Program Interface) from Internet Explorer. Via Internet Explorer on Windows, the equivalent is possible through ActiveX. Since Active X is not supported on the Macintosh there is still no way to have JavaScript interact with WebTerm. One option is to use Netscape on either Windows or Macintosh. LiveConnect allows JavaScript to interact with WebTerm.

Fourth, It is recommended to deploy the Plug-in either by CAB or JAR files. This allows for a transparent and seamless download for users arriving at the WebTerm HTML page for the first time. Unfortunately users on the Macintosh can not, as of yet, use the CAB file to download the plug-in. This is due to the Plug-in interface is not support by ActiveX on the Macintosh.  Downloading via the default HTML file results in the JAR file being downloaded to users who have yet to install WebTerm.  JAR files are support by Netscape and Internet Explorer uses the CAB files.
