WebTerm Frequently Asked Questions

What is the advantage of using ThinTerm?

The key advantage to using ThinTerm is a web browser in not needed to use a WebTerm terminal session. ThinTerm, a component of WebTerm, is a program for Microsoft Windows that integrates the WebTerm ActiveX Control to provide terminal emulation outside of a web browser. The .thn extension is registered and handled by ThinTerm. It provides a resizable terminal window that can be automated using WebTerm macros, and gives users additional control over the WebTerm session from the ThinTerm menu. When a WebTerm session is created in the WebTerm Administrator, there is an option to save the session as either a .wts file or a .thn file.
Please note: The content of .thn files is exactly the same as .wts files. The only difference is the file extensions have been changed to facilitate different behavior when launched. When a web page opens a .thn file, ThinTerm launches and displays the WebTerm terminal session. IF a user double-clicks a .thn file directly from Windows, it starts a terminal session in a ThinTerm window regardless of whether the web browser is running or not. Therefore, ThinTerm is running completely independent of a web browser.
ThinTerm can be started three ways:
- Double-clicking on a .thn file from Microsoft Windows.
- From a URL on a web page that references a .thn file.
- Starting ThinTerm session from the WebTerm Administrator.
