WebTerm Frequently Asked Questions

What if WebTerm does not connect correctly?

If WebTerm does not work, meaning it either does not run or produces a distinct error, it could be due to the following:
- An improper installation of the Plug-in.
- The session files are not referenced correctly or are not available.
- The Web server is not configured correctly.
The following points will help clarify what the problem might be:
First, verify that you meet WebTerm's minimum system requirements, as outlined:
http://www.powerlan-usa.com/webterm/wt-sys-requirements.html
Next, be sure to install WebTerm on your system and restart your Web Browser. Both the Administrator and the plug-in can be downloaded from:

Testing the WebTerm plug-in:
If you have access to the Internet it is recommended that you first test the WebTerm Plug-in with the online demos at:
http://www.powerlan-usa.com/webterm/wt-demo-guide.html
Note that some of the WebTerm demos only work with some browsers and or operating systems. Also, if you are behind a firewall that block the http and or telnet ports you will not be able to connect.
If your installation of the WebTerm Plug-in works with our online demos, then you have a good installation of the WebTerm Plug-in.
If there are problems using WebTerm with other pages, for example sessions created by your company, then there is a local problem with either your network or how the session files are provided. Please contact your technical support for assistance.
However, depending on how the session files are posted on a Web server, you might be able to save the .htm and .wts files to your hard disk. If the session files work from your desktop, but not from the Web server, the problem is typically that the MIME type is not set correctly on the Web server.
Testing the WebTerm Administrator:
If you need to create your own sessions with the WebTerm Administrator, it is recommended that you follow the following procedure:
Create and test the session from within the WebTerm Administrator. If you have problems connecting to the host, verify that you can telnet to the host (using Window's telnet or various shareware utilities). You will not be able to use WebTerm unless you can telnet since that is the connection protocol that WebTerm uses.
If the session works from within the WebTerm Administrator save the .wts and .htm sessions files to your hard drive and open them with a browser to verify that it works. If not, verify that you have a good installation of the WebTerm Plug-in.
Note that by default the .wts & .htm files need to be in the same location to work.
If the session files work from your desktop, next you want to distribute them to another user's desktop to verify that they work there. If not, verify that they have installed the Plug-in and that they can telnet to the host system.
Finally, publish the session files to your Web server, being sure to set the MIME type for the Web server for WebTerm. If the sessions work from a user's desktop but not from a Web server, then typically the Web server's MIME type is not configured correctly.
