Version 8.0

Thank you for using eXodusª, Powerlan USA's X Window System display server for the Macintosh¨. This document provides information about the Version 8.0 release of eXodus.

You can browse Powerlan USA's eXodus site on the World Wide Web at http://www.powerlan-usa.com/exodus for information about product updates and technical support bulletins.

The following information is intended to help you install and use the software.

System Requirements

eXodus requires the following configuration:

  •  A PowerPC, iMac, Macintosh G3 or Macintosh G4 computer
  • Mac OS 8.6 or later version, including Mac OS X
  • CarbonLib 1.2 or later 
    (CarbonLib 1.3.1 is available as part of the eXodus installation)
  • Apple's OpenGL Libraries 1.1.2 or later are required if using the eXodus GLX extension (The OpenGL Installer is available on the eXodus CD)

Installation Guidelines

To assure a successful installation of eXodus, turn off all virus protection software. To install eXodus from the eXodus CD, double-click the Install eXodus icon on the eXodus CD and follow the on-screen instructions.

When eXodus is installed on Mac OS X systems, the Powerlan Ltd. SSH client, TunnelMateª can be downloaded as part of the installation. TunnelMate may also be installed at a later time by accessing the TunnelMate Installer at http://www.powerlan.com/sshmac/download.

eXodus 8.0 New Features

  • Carbon Application

eXodus 8.0 has been "carbonized" for native execution on Mac OS¨ X. When running on Mac OS X, eXodus presents the new Aquaª User Interface, including a new Aqua-style rootless Window Manager.

  • Integrated SSH support on Mac OS X

eXodus 8.0 provides secure encrypted communications on Mac OS X systems using the Powerlan Ltd. SSH (Secure Shell) client, TunnelMate, Version 1.0.

Once TunnelMate has been installed, use the eXodus Command Processor pop-up menu on the Connection Manager Client panel to select SSH. Do not define the DISPLAY variable in the Command text field, as the DISPLAY variable is automatically set up by SSH.

Please stay in touch with Powerlan for information about the next release of TunnelMate which will add suport for both Mac OS 9 and Windows operating systems.

  • Built-in OpenGL®support

Support for OpenGL is now included as a basic option in eXodus 8.0. To enable OpenGL support, select the GLX extension in the Server Settings, X Extensions panel.

GLX supports X clients using GLX protocol Version 1.2 or earlier. It provides hardware acceleration of three-dimensional graphics on systems with Rage II, Rage Pro and Rage 128 based video.

Known Issues and Limitations

  • When displaying OpenGL clients On Mac OS X in rooted screen mode, OpenGL client windows are always "front-most". Using the Aqua rootless window manager on OS X systems will give the best results when running OpenGL clients.
