Support - eXodus - session starts, but no X display appears

eXodusFrequently Asked Questions

The session starts, but no X display appears on the Mac?

If the X session on the host starts but the X display doesn't appear on the Mac and you don't receive any error messages from the host, the problem is likely that the host is not able to send the display data through the network to the IP address of the computer running eXodus.

Possible causes include:

  • Port 6000 for X11 data, or port 7000/7100 for font server data, is not open on the end users subnet/gateway/firewall or a similar network impediment.
  • The display is being sent to another system that "shares" the same IP address.
  • The computer running eXodus has multiple network cards and it is reporting an invalid IP for the X host to send the display to.

To isolate the problem you need to "half split" the system to determine what is working and what is causing the problem.  The quickest method is by swapping the network connection of the problem system for a known good system and see if the host can send the data through that connection.  If so, then the problem is on the network.  If not, the problem is on the Mac.

See the troubleshooting section of the manual for an overview of the components involved in displaying X.
