eXodus Frequently Asked Questions

How can I copy and paste text between X clients and a Macintosh application?

In many cases, copying text from an X client to the Clipboard is as simple selecting the text, and pasting from the clipboard to the X client is as simple as clicking a mouse button.  However, the procedure for copying and pasting text differ for each X client and window manager.  The following procedure will work for most X clients, although you may need to modify it if the X client does not use the common primary transfer butter.

Copying text from an X client to a Macintosh:

Open the eXodus Edit menu and select Clipboard Transfer.  Once the Clipboard Transfer dialog box opens, configure as follows:

  • Click the "Become Selection Owner" button.
  • Selection Name: Primary
  • Paste Format: TEXT* or STRING**

Leave the Clipboard Transfer dialog box open.  In the X client window, highlight the text you wish to copy.  Back in the Clipboard Transfer dialog box, click the "Paste Selection to Macintosh Clipboard" button.  The item that you had highlighted is now in the Macintosh Clipboard.  To verify, Open the eXodus Edit menu and select "Show Clipboard".

Copying text from a Macintosh application to an X client:

In the Macintosh application, highlight the text that you wish to copy and either hold down the "apple key" and "C" or you can click Edit and then click Copy.  You can verify that the text has been copied to the Macintosh clipboard by Opening the Apple menu and selecting Show Clipboard.  In eXodus, select the X client window you wish to past the text into.  Open the eXodus Edit menu and select Clipboard Transfer,  Once the Clipboard Transfer dialog box opens, configure as follows:

  • Click the "Become Selection Owner" button
  • Selection Name: Primary
  • Paste Format: TEXT* or STRING**

Leave the Clipboard Transfer dialog box open.  Go back to the X client window you wish to paste the text into and use its procedure for pasting text.  Typically this is either a menu item or mouse click.  For example, in an xterm you would use the second mouse button (or Apple key + 2) to paste text.

Please note:

* TEXT:  Text setting is usually ASCII or EBCDIC representation.  Most often you can review them using an editor.

**STRING:  Represents an ordered series of data values.  Usually the bytes denote printable characters.  Most programming languages consider string distinct from numbers.  They are typically stored in fixed-length binary or floating point representation.
