Support - eXodus - Which connection protocol to use

eXodus Frequently Asked Questions

What connection protocol should I use?

eXodus supports automated connections using the RSH, REXEC, and XDM connection protocols.  Additionally, you can use a Telnet session to start an X application and redirect the display to the IP Address of the computer running eXodus.  Generally speaking, the connection protocol you use is determined by which ones are supported by the host, and how you are connecting to the network.  See your host's system administrator for information on which connection protocol your host supports.

Modem connections generally can be difficult to make a connection to the host.  If you are connecting to the network using a dynamic IP Address, such as typically supplied by an ISP, you typically cannot use REXEC or RSH connection protocols since they require your Mac's IP to be listed in the etc/host file.   It is not recommended to use XDM if using a relatively slow modem and if the XDM process on your host starts a desktop window manager, such as CDE or Sun OpenWindows.  An alternative to using REXEC, RSH, and XDM is to use a Telnet session.

For specific information on using the REXEC, RSH, and XDM connection protocols, see the following FAQs:
