5PM Term Frequently Asked Questions

Why are my function keys not working now that I am on system 9.0.4 or later?

In system 9.0.4 (and later), Apple added a feature in its keyboard control panel for "Hot Function Keys". This feature is enabled/disabled via the Keyboard Control Panel, when you click on "Function Keys...". If the Check Box entitled "Use F1 through F15 as Hot Function Keys" is checked, then function keys will behave differently than in earlier versions of Mac OS, and will not work properly with 5PM or WebTerm. When the item is unchecked, the function keys will work properly with one limitation: a function key that is typed with the Option (a.k.a. Alt) modifier is no longer distinguishable from a function key without it. This means that if, for example, your keyboard map has the F13 character code mapped to the combined Option-F3 keystroke, Macintosh programs like 5PM and WebTerm will see it as just F3.The workaround we suggest is to use the Control modifier in place of Option to do the same thing. Fortunately, this mapping is already set up by default in the VT420 key maps, so you can get the F11-F20 keys using the Control modifier without making any key mapping changes.
