5PM Term Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my Mac freezing/crashing when I "wake it up" from sleep mode?

There are a few reasons for wake-from-sleep freezes and crashes on the Macintosh:
- USB devices can cause the crash. The workaround would be to disconnect the USB device from the Mac before the Mac goes to sleep.
- Specific applications left up and running before it falls asleep (i.e. Netscape). Make sure you have closed the problem program before letting the Macintosh fall asleep. To bring the computer back from the freeze, exit the offending software by using the "Apple-Option-Escape" sequence. This uses a force-quit and brings your Macintosh back to life. You will lose any work that may not have been saved. A restart of the Macintosh is recommended .
- Apple's InputSprocket Extension can cause the crash. Macintosh uses this extension for only playing certain games. Disable this extension if no games have been played.
- Preserve Memory Contents on Sleep option is enabled can also cause the crash. The Preserve Memory Sleep option is located in the Energy Saver control panel of iBooks and FireWire PowerBooks. Restart your Macintosh and press and hold down the <esc> key until the smiling Macintosh appears. Updating to OS 9.0.4 will prevent this crash. If you do not upgrade, make sure you never enable this Preserve Memory option. Apple has released a Sleep Memory extension that grays out the option so you can not select it.
