5PM Term Frequently Asked Questions

How do I start an X client using 5PM Term for Macintosh?

Using 5PM Term for Macintosh you can telnet to your host computer and at its command prompt start an X client and redirect the display to the IP of the Macintosh computer that is running and X display server, such as our eXodus for Macintosh product.  This procedure is typically used when using the REXEC, RSH, or XDM X connection protocols are not appropriate.  Following is the procedure for starting the xterm X client on a UNIX host.  You may need to adapt these procedures for your specific situation.

Before beginning you need to know the IP address of the host computer and your Macintosh  computer.  You can determine your Macintosh's IP Address by opening the Apple Menu, selecting Control Panel and choosing TCP/IP.  Click on the button for "get info" and it should list the current IP.

1.  Start eXodus for Macintosh, but do not open a connection.

2.  Start 5PM Term for Macintosh and configure it for a connection to your host system on which you wish to start the X client.  A typical configuration is as follows:

Settings menu, select Connections, set Method to TCPack (for use with TCP/IP networks such as the internet), enter the IP address of the Unix host computer, and click OK.

Settings menu, select Terminal, set Emulation to asc420/ansi, and click OK.

Session menu, select Open Connection.  the Terminal window opens and you are presented with the log on prompt of your Unix host system.  Log in.

3.  At the command prompt, enter the command to run the X client and redirect the display to the IP Address of your Macintosh that is running eXodus.  An example of a command that starts and xterm is:

/usr/bin/X11/xterm -display xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:0.0 &

where "/usr/bin/X11" is the path to the X client "xterm" and "-display" redirects its display to your IP, indicated here with xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx, :0.0 tells the X client which screen to appear on, and the & character indicates that the client should run in the background so as not to lock up your command prompt until finished.

An xterm appears on the screen of your X display server.
