eXodus 9.0 New Features

  • Enhanced Rootless Screen Support for X Desktop Environments

In addition to the native Macintosh Window styles and Motif-style provided in rootless screen mode, eXodus now displays rootless windows in the window style of a remote window manager such as twm or kwin. Remote X sessions may be launched in rootless screen mode using XDM protocol with the resulting client applications displayed in the window style of the session window manager. Whenever a remote window manager starts, eXene, eXodus' local window manager, stops managing rootless windows and allows the remote window manager to control the display of the rootless windows.

Window managers often have a root (main) menu that is displayed whenever you click on the root window. Whenever eXodus determines that a window manager is actively checking for mouse clicks on the (invisible) root window, a small "X Root Taskbar" window is automatically displayed. Clicking the mouse within this window generates a "root click" just as if the mouse were actually clicked on the root window.

The "Allow Remote Window Manager To Start" check box has been added to the Server Settings:Screens panel. This setting is selected by default. If this setting is not selected, remote window managers are prohibited from managing the rootless screen.

"Invisible Rooted Screen" mode is no longer supported as its functionality has been merged into rootless screen mode.

  • Local X Application Launch

On Mac OS X systems, local X client applications may now be launched using the eXodus Connection Manager. Click the "Local" button and specify the command to launch the local X client application. The DISPLAY environment variable is automatically set. The PATH environment variable is modified to include "/usr/X11R6/bin".

  • Warp Cursor Support

X client applications may now move the X cursor. The "Allow Client To Move Cursor" check box has been added to the Server Settings:Screens panel. This setting is checked by default.

  • Easier Configuration

The default value for several eXodus Server Settings have been changed in order to simplify eXodus configuration. The defaults for the following settings have changed:

  • The default Screen Type is now rootless.
  • The Rootless Option, "Allow Client To Change Window Stacking", is selected.
  • All X Extensions are selected.
  • The Font Paths setting, "Report SetFontPath Errors" is now unselected.

  • Bundled SSH Client

TunnelMate, Powerlan USA's SSH client for Mac OS X computers, is now installed on Mac OS X systems by the eXodus installer. TunnelMate software is installed in the eXodus 9.0 folder. For more information, consult the TunnelMate ReadMe.

eXodus 9.0 Problems Resolved

  • A problem that could cause black areas to be displayed in client windows has been corrected.

  • A crash that occurred when defining a very long color name "on-the-fly" has been fixed.

  • A problem that prevented saving a custom keymap has been fixed.

  • A problem which prevented the complete drawing of eXene's Motif-style window frame has been corrected.

Known Issues and Limitations

On OS X systems, the user must have root privileges in order to launch clients from the eXodus Connection Manager using the RSH protocol.
